This is the log cabin we bought - believe it or not - quite a sight - looks impossible, doesn't it? Not to us (crazy dreamers of saving all things impossible)
So, we filled four Industrial size dumpsters - and they have all been carted away over the last few weeks...phew....Even the guy who picked up the dumpsters wanted to know how all of this fit into that log cabin....
The animals are all doing well - adjusting and playing, napping and eating all day long - just like always.
The three things that I love that were in the log cabin when we purchased it - but were not immediately visible with all of the junk in there - were - #1 a beautiful old enamel double sink with drainboards that was on a metal sink base, #2 a large wooden cabinet - looked kind of like it had been in an old store/drug store, and #3 a yellow/cream colored enamel wood cooking stove. I thought those three things were reason enough to buy this place.....I scrubbed up the enamel sink with Bar Keepers Friend and it looks amazing. The wooden (covered a whole wall) cabinet/counter/drawers and lower storage is amazing storage. Emptied it and cleaned it several times with Murphy's Oil. The cook stove is really a great piece - we're not going to use it for heat or cooking - probably a big old beautiful plant stand.
This is actually the bathroom after we ripped out all of old, icky fixtures, walls and anything else that needed to go....which was everything.... JUST PICTURE "the old bathroom was used by hunters for many years" AND looked like a bathroom that would be in the 'house' pictured above - too icky to show - just know that we wore gloves and face masks...So, now, what to do....We thought we would start with the bathroom. Looked like a 'hunters dream" bathroom - camouflage (icky) shower curtains, ash trays and just a lot of ick. I am someone that loves to watch videos of people cleaning up hoarders' houses - so, I went at it like the 'cleaners' of those house do. I have every size brush, bleach, baking soda, vinegar, Dawn and Comet. The best cleaner is good old elbow grease. We cleaned everything before we even wanted to touch it to remove it....So, everything went...did install a new toilet and got the new shower/tub in place. It's a process - does take longer than the 1/2 hr. DIY shows on television.
The Shelving unit that was in the log cabin - looks like it came out of an old store - has beautiful old glass doors which we removed to clean...put them back on afterwards...my husband raised the upper shelves up off of the counter and installed outlets - so that I could put appliances on the counter.
The beautiful old cook stove.... cleaned it up - and did use it as a plant stand. We placed it right under a sky light - and my plants love it...
So, the remodeling of the log cabin begins - it feels good to have thrown out all of the stuff that was on the 1st floor and get the remodeling process started - but we still have the basement, the upstairs, the machine shop and the mobile home that is located on the property to still go through and make decisions about. We've peeked in all of those places, and we will definitely need some more industrial dumpsters back in the yard - at a later date...
